Kolkata : Indian Railways, aptly called the ‘Lifeline of the Nation’ is poised to fight against the Coronavirus pandemic by adopting various measures including movement of Time Tabled Parcel Express Trains for maintaining uninterrupted supply of essential commodities to every nook and corner of the country during crisis in the wake of Covid-19.
As a part of commitment to the nation, Kharagpur Division of South Eastern Railway has geared up its entire network to run Parcel Cargo Express Trains towards different destinations in the country. During the month of July, 2020, Kharagpur Division loaded record number of 113 rakes containing different essential commodities for supply to different parts of the country. In the month of July, 2020, Kharagpur Division loaded 7744 MT in Parcel Cargo Express trains as against 5158 MT loaded in the month of June, 2020 achieving a growth of 50%. Revenue earned by Kharagpur Division by carrying parcel goods in the month of July, 2020 has been Rs. 2.86 crores as against Rs. 1.68 crores earned in the month of June, 2020 thereby registering a growth of 70%.
The essential commodities carried by the parcel cargo express trains included food items, groceries, medicines, medical equipments, PPE Kits, fish, fruits, cotton goods, mosquito net, vegetables, flowers, cloth, tarpaulin etc.
